Experience
Joana specialises in EU and Competition law.
Her practice covers a wide range of proceedings relating to anti-competitive practices, including cartels, abuse of dominant position and vertical restraints. Joana is actively involved in drafting, reviewing and implementing competition law compliance programmes, and has significant experience in merger control, advising on notifications and clearance procedures before competition authorities. She also has experience in State aid matters.
Her recent work has focused on investigations into no-poach agreements, hub-and-spoke arrangements, and theories of harm associated with the facilitation of cartels. Joana has experience in challenging decisions by competition authorities before the courts, including requests for preliminary rulings from the Court of Justice of the European Union, as well as in actions for damages arising from breaches of competition law.
Joana has particular expertise in antitrust assessments and proceedings in sectors such as distribution and retail, FMCG, TMC and sport, assisting clients during dawn raids and investigations, including by responding to statements of objections and requests for information.
Her Master’s degree thesis focused on cartel facilitation and algorithmic collusion, reflecting her focus on emerging theories of harm in digital markets.
