Pérez-Llorca/IE Chair on Commercial Law. Investment opportunities in the Spanish renewable energy sector

07/06/2016

The last session of the Pérez-Llorca/IE Chair on Commercial Law was hosted in New York City and was dedicated to reflect on investment opportunities in the Spanish renewable energy market. José María de Paz, a partner at Pérez-Llorca in the corporate department opened the event and was a speaker along with Paul Maudes, Head of Project Finance for Latin America at Crédit Agricole CIB; Benoit Allehaut, Director of Capital Dynamics; and Ian Ross, Managing Director of Deutsche Bank. Margarita Oliva Sainz de Aja, International Partner at Chadbourne & Parke moderated the panel.

José María de Paz briefly reviewed the main legislative developments in recent years in the Spanish renewable energy sector and the underlying reasons that led to such changes.

Following the opening remarks, the speakers reviewed some of the most relevant issues from an investor perspective such as the difficulty of assessing profitability of a long-term project, the role of technology in the coming years compared to other energy markets at an international level (United States, Brazil, Chile and Peru) and the impact of different regulatory models. They then analyzed the most favorable investment opportunities highlighting the refinancing of existing projects and the transactions in secondary markets.

At the end of the conference, Margarita Oliva Sainz de Aja moderated a lively discussion between speakers and participants which included representatives of the American and Spanish business and legal fields.

For the first time since its inception, the Pérez-Llorca/IE Chair on Commercial Law has been held outside Spain. New York was chosen as host city as a result of Pérez-Llorca opening an office last year in this strategic plaza.
