M&A: What Explains the Leadership Gap for Women Lawyers in Major Transactions?

14/04/2026
Published in LexLatin

Women’s participation in M&A in Latin America has shown significant progress, yet a gap remains in access to leadership positions. In this context, partners from Pérez-Llorca in Mexico City and Bogotá share their perspectives on the structural factors that continue to limit career progression to the top of the practice.

In an analysis published by LexLatin, María Teresa Paillés and María Esther Rey, partners at Pérez-Llorca México in Mexico City, together with Lina Uribe, partner and Head of M&A at Pérez-Llorca’s Bogotá office, agree that the challenge is no longer the incorporation of women into deal teams, but rather their retention and access to leadership roles in complex transactions.

Although the pool of female talent has grown steadily, structural barriers persist, including the expectation of constant availability, the concentration of women in support roles, limited client exposure and the lack of sponsorship.
