Profile

José Luis Velarde joined the firm in 2021 as a senior counsel and has been a partner since 2022. He specialises in criminal law, with a practice focused on preventive advice on criminal compliance and on the defence of highly complex criminal investigations and litigation, with a particular emphasis on economic criminal law.

• Master’s Degree in Criminal Law, Universidad de Barcelona and Universidad Pompeu Fabra (2008).
• Lawyer, Universidad de Lima (2003).

He speaks Spanish and English.

Experience

José Luis has extensive experience in advising on and developing compliance and prevention systems relating to money laundering, terrorist financing and anti-corruption for corporate clients. Previously, he was a founding partner of a firm specialising in litigation and compliance, and a partner in the criminal law department of a leading local firm, where he joined as a senior associate. He has served as Regional Vice-Chair of Lex Mundi’s Latin American & Caribbean Litigation and Arbitration Practice Group (2017–2019) and as a member of the Compliance Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) (2018–2019).

Academic and Publishing Collaborations

He has been a professor of Criminal Law and Theory of Crime at the Faculty of Law of the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences between 2014 and 2020.
