Fracking Requires More Agile Contracts with Pemex, Say Experts

The exploitation of unconventional hydrocarbons in Mexico will require more flexible contractual frameworks and legal certainty to attract companies with experience in this type of project. Antonio De Lisi, Partner in the Projects, Energy and Infrastructure practice, warns that the mixed contracts currently used by Pemex may need to be modified to suit the dynamics of shale resources.

In an interview with El Economista, Antonio De Lisi notes that unconventional hydrocarbon projects require contracts that allow for greater operational flexibility, adjustments to timelines and appropriate mechanisms to manage variable costs, in addition to efficient coordination of permits and authorisations. The Pérez-Llorca Partner warns that maintaining contractual frameworks designed for conventional projects could delay or even hinder the development of these resources.
