Legal Briefing: Amendments to the Labour Code and labour-related measures planned for 2027

01/01/1970

We share our Legal Briefing outlining the main labour law developments expected in Portugal for 2027. Specifically, the Portuguese Parliament has approved Draft Law No. 176/XVII/1st, which is expected to enter into force, following promulgation and publication, alongside the 2027 State Budget Law, likely on 1 January 2027.

I. Extension of Initial Parental Leave

A plenary session of the Portuguese Parliament (Assembleia da República) has approved Draft Law No. 176/ XVII/1.ª, which extends the initial parental leave and introduces a new continuous working day regime for employees with family responsibilities.

The legislation provides for amendments to the Labour Code, as well as to Decree-Law No. 91/2009 of 9 April and Decree-Law No. 89/2009 of 9 April (concerning social protection in parenthood), among which the following are particularly noteworthy:

  • Increase of initial parental leave periods by an additional 30 days, up to 150, 180 or 210 consecutive days, with amendments to the rules for both parents to take leave simultaneously.
